In 1932, the family moved from Westfall to Oakley, where he attended school and graduated in 1947. He was a student at Kansas University for one year, and then transferred to Kansas State University, where he graduated in 1952 with a degree in Business and Milling Administration. That same day he received his commission in the Air Force through the R.O.T.C. program, and in the evening he and Edith Suter were married in the chapel on the K-State Campus.
Bob served in the Air Force for 2 years during the Korean War; most of that time he was stationed at Walker Air Base in Roswell, New Mexico.
Bob and Edith then moved to Wallace, Kansas where he managed the elevator for 5 years, was a 4-H leader, and especially enjoyed taking a carload of boys to the Stock Show in Denver for several years.
The family moved to Oakley in 1959 to manage the elevator. He also served on the Soil Conservation Board for several years, often taking a trip each spring to Nebraska with grandsons for a truckload of small cedar trees to be planted in windbreaks, and usually visiting the museum in Minden on the way. He served on the City Council and School Board. After retiring from the elevator, Bob became a fulltime farmer, working the land he loved.
Bob was a member of the Oakley Christian Church for 63 years, served as Secretary of the Board, and was a forwarding Agent for Tom Freshour – a missionary in Mexico for 15 years each. He taught Sunday School for a few years, and was currently on the missions committee.
