Doris F. Teeter, age 93, formerly of Grinnell, died on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby, KS.
Doris Frances (Schoenfeld) Teeter was born in a sod house north of Park, Kansas on July 31, 1922. She was the third of six children born to Martin and Mary (Ploeger) Schoenfeld. Growing up during the depression, many stories were told about the dust storms, big gardens, canning, and having to gather cow chips for fuel. Even going to church during the winter months was a challenge because the water had to be drained from the radiator of the Model T so it would not freeze during the Sunday services.
On October 22, 1942 she was united in marriage to W. M. "Shorty" Teeter in WaKeeney, KS. To this union four children were born; Darlene who died in infancy, Donald Ray (Jackie) Teeter of Grinnell, KS; Mary Jane (Keith) Rathgeber of Kiowa, KS; and Larry Dean Teeter (friend Terry Starns) of Brewster, KS.
Family gatherings were fun times especially if you were celebrating a birthday with angel food cake and homemade banana ice cream. Doris was an excellent cook, her fried chicken, turkey & dressing, apple bread, fruitcake, burnt sugar pie and the list goes on…..And "Ma Teeter" had the BEST coffee around shared on a Sunday morning after church usually with cookies that she always kept in a Tupperware container in the freezer.
She loved a good game of cards, dominos or checkers. These were her and Shorty's evening entertainment usually with Doris ending up the loser and "Pappy" as she called him laughing at her anger. Her yard was her domain; she loved her garden & flowers and had the greenest grass around. She was a homemaker, a cook at the school and caregiver to several elderly ladies in Grinnell. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary #2864 and the United Methodist Women.
Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother with five living generations. She will be missed by her children: Don, Jane, Larry; 13 grandchildren: Melissa Byerly, Melanie McDonough, Christopher Teeter, Meredith Lewallen, Brian Rathgeber, Brandi Thom, Brad Rathgeber, Brent Rathgeber, Sarah Castle, Adam Teeter, Andrew Teeter, Emily Teeter and Aaron Teeter; 34 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth & Victoria Basham, Alissa & Nicholas Byerly, Dawson & Cole McDonough, Matthew & Luke Teeter, Brooklyn, Makayla, Sydney & Tayte Lewallen, Taylor, Tristan & Trina Rathgeber, Micah, Madison & Morgan Polson, Carrington Thom, Trae, Bryn, Caden & Bryson Rathgeber, Gavin & Ethan Rathgeber, Rebekah, Maiah & Dane Castle, Avyn, Axtyn & Aspyn Teeter, Italy, Nala, and Talon Teeter; and a great-great grandson, William Carpenter.
