Obituary

Dorothy J. Davis, age 95, died January 28, 2021 at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas after a brief illness. Dorothy Jeanette Rhea was the fourth of six children born to John Theodore and Clara Belle (Lockard) Rhea in Saline County, on June 14th, 1925. She came with her family to Logan County in 1931, and graduated from Oakley High School in 1943. On September 15th, 1946, she married Glen Carl Davis at her family home in Oakley. He died in August of 2016.

Dorothy was a homemaker. She loved to garden, and preserved the bounty of the season for her family to enjoy all year long. She cultivated a beautiful and varied collection of irises, peonies, roses, and tulips, as well as other flowers, and several fruit trees. She was a gifted seamstress and knitter, with her family and friends being the recipients of handcrafted clothing, swimwear, afghans for graduations, Christmas stockings, baby blankets, doll clothes, sweaters, a wedding gown and trousseau, a baptismal gown, mittens, hats, gloves, scarves, padded hangers, and kitchen cotton dishcloths and towels. Dorothy collected cookbooks and celebrated her loved ones' birthdays with elaborately decorated cakes (always made to order and served with homemade ice cream!). She played bridge, liked to square dance, and enjoyed many, many years of camping, fishing, and boating with her family. She was a member of the Oakley United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Rhea; her husband, Glen, her sons, Donald and Rodney Davis; a brother, Merrill Rhea; and her sisters, Virginia Read and Hazel Daniels.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Sheryl (Tom) Giessel of Larned, Kansas, and two sisters, Helen Ostmeyer and Mildred Gilkerson, both of Oakley,  She had seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Angela Davis of Chandler, Arizona; James (Heidi) Davis, Avery, and Adam of Benson, Minnesota; Johnathan Davis and daughter Graci of Dighton, Kansas; Jacob Davis, of Chandler, Arizona; Andrew (Darci Hanna) Giessel, Sylvia, and Naomi of Somerville, Massachusetts; Kate Giessel of Kansas City, Missouri; and Ann (Diego) Bonsignore, Danny, and Enzo of Mission, Kansas.

Dorothy will be greatly missed, but lovingly remembered, by her family and many friends, especially Steve and Loretta Moore of Oakley, and their children, Rachael Moore and sons, Sterling and Hayden of Denver, CO; and Joel Moore of Oakley.
