Dwayne Ralph Nelson, age 76, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley. He was born August 29, 1938 in Central City, Nebraska to Elbert Vernon and Marie Emma Marguerite (Fraun) Nelson. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Dwayne was raised on the Nelson family farm near Central City, Nebraska in the 40's and 50's. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1960, he returned to the farm to help his dad raise wheat, corn and milo. Later he invested in a Charolais cattle herd and a hog farm operation. After leaving the farm, he worked at a munitions depot in Nebraska for awhile before he moved to Iowa. Later he moved to Brighton, Colorado and worked at the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado. He also did building repair and maintenance for several Lutheran churches in the area. Dwayne settled in Oakley, Kansas in the 90's and worked for Schippers-Wilcox Harvesting for many years on the custom cutter crew. During the winter months, he worked at the Grinnell Co-op feed mill for a short time and then for a number of years with S & W Trucking in Oakley. For many years, Dwayne became interested and involved in nutrition and vitamins and herb supplements. He often talked about the benefits and value of supplements to rejuvenate the body and to promote and maintain good physical and mental health.
Dwayne very much treasured his church family and his faith. He loved to hear organ music thundering through the sanctuary. Bible study was always precious to Dwayne, where he could gain a deeper understanding of the teachings of scripture. He always encouraged everyone to be faithful in worship, and to learn God's will for their life. Thinking up new strategies to bring the gospel to others was dear to him. His fellow Christians became family to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Vernon and Marie, Dwayne's infant twin brother, and infant sister Carol Ann Nelson.
Dwayne is survived by his brother Darrell Nelson and wife Kathy of Prescott Valley, Arizona, niece Shannon Nelson, and nephew Mark Nelson and their families.
