Edward M. "Ed" Greene, age 81, of Oakley, died Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the Logan County Hospital, Oakley. He was born on January 18, 1935 in Oklahoma City, OK to John and Lura (Robertson) Greene. He was in Co-op management in several locations and a U.S. Army veteran. Ed married Lila Atkinson on January 29, 1960 in Topeka.
Preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife Lila of the home, brothers: Bill and Leonard of Poteau, OK, sisters: Jeannie Potts of Houston, TX, Kathy Baker of Ft. Worth, TX, and Lois Witney of Tulsa, OK.
Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley with interment in Oakley Cemetery. No visitation. Casket will remain closed. Edward M. "Ed" Greene, age 81, of Oakley, died Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the Logan County Hospital, Oakley. He was born on January 18, 1935 in Oklahoma City, OK to John and Lura (Robertson) Greene.
Ed grew up in Poteau, OK. Ed came from a large family with 14 brothers and sisters. He was a hard worker from a young age. Ed also has the distinction of being a part of the State Champion Football team of Poteau, OK. He was recently inducted to the Poteau Hall of Fame.
Ed served in the US Army as a radar technician. Following basic training Ed was stationed in the Panama Canal zone. Upon completion of his military service he attended and graduated from Washburn University with a BS in business.
He met his wife, Lila Atkinson, while he was working part-time selling cars and attending school. She purchased a red '58' Chevrolet Impala from him. They were married on January 29, 1960 in Topeka, KS.
Upon completing his degree he went to work for the Farmers Union Jobbing Association. His father-in-law, Lyle Atkinson, was managing Page City Co-op and needed a bookkeeper. Ed took the job, which was his first of many in the Co-op association. His first management position was the manager of the Golden Belt Cooperative in Ellis, KS. He then served at the Iuka Cooperative Exchange, Iuka, KS; Midwest Cooperative, Quinter, KS; Dodge City Cooperative Exchange, Dodge City, KS; Miami County Cooperative Association, Paola, KS and his final position was Dalhart Cooperative, Dalhart, TX. He was known for his ability to bring a Cooperative into a good financial position. He always shot it to you straight and didn't play favorites.
In 1999, Ed retired and he and Lila moved to Oakley, KS to be close to family. He was always known as "Uncle Ed" to his nieces and nephews. Ed enjoyed woodworking and golf. He was up to the many projects that Lila and his nieces came up with. He enjoyed the holidays with the family and was always in charge of carving the turkey or ham. During retirement you could always find him enjoying a cup of coffee at the local grocery store or One Stop.
