Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Eaton Shipley, age 93, of Oakley, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at her home. She was born September 14, 1921 in Trego County to Joe and Regina (Reitmeier) Flax. She was a homemaker and farmer. She married Moses Harry Eaton on April 15, 1941 in Grinnell. She married Gerald Henry Shipley on August 10, 1996 in Oakley.

Betty cherished all members of her family, immediate and "extended". She worked hard throughout most of her life. On the farm she took care of the house, prepared meals, took meals to the field and drove tractors and grain trucks. Later in life she took care of relatives and friends until she was physically unable to do so. Friends were an important part of Betty's life. Many of the things Betty enjoyed were social, including cards, bingo, dancing, music, visiting a casino occasionally, bowling and especially Yahtzee. There are many memories that Betty helped create, those of us that have them, will cherish them always. She ALWAYS started her day with styled hair, makeup, and neatly pressed clothes. One of the things that many will remember her for is her wit, and sense of humor up until the very end. She loved to laugh, and make others laugh. Betty was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and enjoyed being a part of the Oakley community.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Moses Eaton (1994) and Gerald Shipley (2013), five brothers: John, Carl, Frank, Steven, and William Flax; and eight sisters: Frances Aschenbrenner, Rosie Stieben, Pauline Smith, and Helen Creese, and infant sisters: Mary, Regina, Clara, and Ludvina Flax.

Survivors include: sons, Gene Eaton (Jean Kay) of Des Moines, IA, Skip Eaton (Mary) of Sarasota, FL, and Marc Eaton (Jan) of Kingston Springs, TN; step-daughters Carrol Baker (Don) of Towanda, Linda Schafer (Stan Anderson) of Lincoln, and Charla Shipley of El Dorado, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, a sister, Minnie Rufenacht of Ness City, and extended family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
