Florence Lavona (Vestal) Thompson, age 62, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on June 26, 1950 to Benjamin Robert and Bertha Maxine "Mickey" (Walker) Vestal in Colby, Kansas.
Florence was raised in Oakley, Kansas and baptized in the Oakley Christian Church and was a church member. She graduated from Oakley High School in 1967. After graduation, she moved to Joplin, Missouri and graduated from the Ozark Christian College. She married Daniel Thompson and they divorced. She moved to Columbus, Kansas and transferred her church membership to the First Christian Church of Columbus. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Columbus, and the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge in Leoti, Kansas. She spent much of her time as a care giver and worked in housekeeping for SKIL, (Southwest Kansas Independent Living, State of Kansas), and hospitals. Florence went by her middle name "Lavona" and will be sadly missed by her family members on their birthdays. Florence was always faithful in sending birthday and Christmas cards to her family and friends. Lavona loved to play bingo, cards, and scratch Kansas lottery tickets. She liked bowling and was a member of the local bowling leagues, as well as attending family gatherings and taking care of her family. She returned to Leoti, Kansas to be near her family when she became ill in 2002.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, sister Peggy Uhrich (1995), and brother Benjamin "Robert" Vestal, Jr. (1963). Survivors include her son Michael R. Thompson of Leoti, two grandchildren, Cheyenne Hamilton and Ashlee Lopp, brothers Gary Vestal of Leoti, and Lawrence Vestal of Meraux, LA; sisters Verlene Showalter of Meraux, LA, Carol Riker of Columbus, KS, and Patricia Bell of San Diego, CA, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In memory of Florence, a visitation was held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home. A graveside service was conducted at 11:00 a.m. at the Oakley Cemetery with Pastor Bob Kelly officiating.
