Galen Herbert McGarvey, age 78, of Winona, Kansas died January 27, 2013 at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas. He was born on November 27, 1934 in Hopeland, Pennsylvania to Peter James and Daisy (Putt) McGarvey.
Galen married Donna Jean Rogers on May 9, 1964 in Lebanon, PA. Galen retired as a truck driver for National Carrier truck line and Western Trucking (armored truck company) in Denver. Previously he was employed as a railroad engineer for the Reading Railroad in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Recently he worked at the Walmart Store in Colby. Galen was self-employed for a number of years as an auctioneer, painted cars, and a carpenter in house construction. Galen liked to build things with wood; such as shelves for knickknack items, carvings of people, etc. He also found great enjoyment in driving race cars and attending local car shows. Before he lost his voice, singing gospel music with another couple at various churches brought happiness and joy to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Daisy, daughter Rhonda McGarvey (1957), two brothers, Robert "Bob" McGarvey and Glen McGarvey, and a sister Betty Schott.
Survivors include his wife Donna of the home, four sons: Dennis (Janet) McGarvey of Lebanon, PA, Gregg (Nanci) McGarvey of Warsaw, NC, Gary McGarvey of Lebanon, PA, and Steve McGarvey of Rushville, NY, two daughters: Sandy Herr (Barry) of Palmyra, PA, and Gale Welan (Ray) of Annville, PA; a sister, Jenny Potkul of Colby, KS, thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Galen will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and neighbors.
Funeral service was 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 4 at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley with Phil Beesley officiating. Interment will follow in the Winona Cemetery.
