Obituary

Norma Bernice Washburn, age 95, of Scottsdale, Arizona, (formerly of Oakley) died on June 22, 2014 at her home in Scottsdale. She was born on February 22, 1919 on the family farm five miles north of Winona, Kansas to Louis "Lute" and Lida (Waldmeier) Gfeller. She grew up in the Winona area and graduated from Winona Consolidated Schools.

Norma was united in marriage to Robert O. Washburn on May 4, 1938 in Hays, Kansas. They were blessed with three daughters: Sharon, Lynne, and Joyce. They made their home in Winona almost all of their married life.

Norma worked as a clerk at Modern Market and Lockers for several years before Robert and Norma purchased the business when they changed the name to Washburns IGA. Robert preceded her in death on October 25, 2008.

Norma was a member of the Winona United Methodist Church, Church Circle, and UMW. She enjoyed crocheting, especially afghans (which number over 100), cross stitching and working with plastic canvas. She gave almost all of her work to family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert "Robbie" in 2008, son-in-law Sam Scott, brothers Kenneth and Harley Gfeller, sister Nelda Beesley, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Surviving family include three daughters: Sharon (Doug) Mackley, of Winona, Kansas, Lynne Scott and Joyce (David) Atkinson, all of Scottsdale, Arizona, 11 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 31 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Winona, with Pastor Sheryl Johnson officiating. Visitation: Friday, June 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Interment will be in the Winona Cemetery.
