Pauline Smith, age 88, of Winona, passed away on May 5, 2013 at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Merriam, Kansas.
She was born on August 4, 1924 in Trego County, Kansas to Joseph Frank and Regina (Reitmeier) Flax. She married Harold William Smith on December 31, 1940 in Oakley. To this union five children were born: Connie, Carroll, Velma, Ron, and Ellen. She was a homemaker and operated and managed the family farm in Logan County after Harold passed away on July 28, 1971.
Some of Pauline's interests included the Western Plains Arts Council, dancing, bowling, travel, music, and having coffee with her dearest friends. Activities that she loved to do during her life were very diverse and varied from trail rides on the Butterfield Trail Ride at Russell Springs and the Cross Country Trail Ride at Emminence, Missouri to opera.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Regina, husband Harold (1971), daughters: Connie Warfield (1995) and Ellen Smith (1995), brothers: John, Carl, Frank, Steven, and Willey Flax (infant), sisters: Frances Aschenbrenner, Rosie Stieben, and Helen Creese, and infant sisters: Mary, Regina, Clara, and Lovina Flax.
Pauline is survived by her sons: Carroll Smith (Ethel) of Ensign, Kansas and Ron Smith (Sher-2009) of Overland Park, Kansas and daughter Velma Irish of Olathe, Kansas; 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and sisters Betty Eaton Shipley of Oakley, and Minnie Rufenacht of Ness City, Kansas, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pauline will be dearly missed by many of her family and friends.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Oakley. Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, with rosary/wake service at 7:30 p.m. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery.
