Obituary

Vergie Bell Abell was born August 3, 1901 in Gove County to Samuel Taylor Scott and Celia Ellen (Steele) Scott. Vergie was the fourth child born out of a family of 6 boys and 3 girls.

Vergie lived in Gove County all during her childhood and school years. She attended country schools and graduated from Gove High School. She then attended Normal Institute in Gove for 1 month, wrote on the teachers' examination and received a 2-year teaching certificate. She taught school 2 years at Orion, KS, where she met Jean Hatheway Abell.

Jean and Vergie were married on June 18, 1922. Three children were born to this union: Edna Maxine, Lola Edith, and Robert Jean. They lived on the Bilby Ranch southeast of Russell Springs where Edna was born.

Jean and Vergie left the Bilby Ranch and moved in with Jean's parents on the Ranch at Orion, where Lola was born. They lived there for awhile and then moved onto the Walter Litton farm (the present Jim Losey farm). They then moved to the Lane Cleveland farm, and then onto the Depperschmidt farm in the West Sunny Slope School area, where Bob was born in 1929.

The two girls attended Sunny Slope School until 1931. At that time, Jean and Vergie moved back to the Abell Ranch at Orion and bought it from Jean's mother after her husband died.

When Edna was ready for college, Lola was in High School and Bob was in 7th grade. They bought a house in Greeley, CO and Vergie and the children spent the school term in Greeley and moved back to the ranch during the summer until the family completed their schooling. They sold the house in Greeley and moved back to the Abell Ranch where Vergie and Bob helped Jean until his death in September, 1972.

Both Edna and Lola married and lived in various places. Bob was drafted into the Korean War. Vergie lived on the Abell Ranch until 1989. At that time, at the age of 88, she decided it was time to move to town and let someone younger operate the Ranch.

Vergie rented an apartment in Oakley and lived there until hospitalization in early 2000 and for interim periods afterwards.
Vergie loved cooking, especially baking; when grandchildren came to visit they always wanted some of her delicious "crisps". She enjoyed gardening and working with her hands. Vergie thoroughly enjoyed her family and many friends who will all miss her.

She was baptized in and was a member of the Gove Methodist Church in her earlier years. Later she attended and gave her support to several other churches, always with faith and trust in the Lord.

Vergie was preceded in death by her husband, Jean, daughter Lola, her parents and all brothers and sisters.

Vergie is survived by her daughter Edna Wiggins and husband Warren of Haymarket, VA and by her son Robert and wife Marjorie Abell of Grinnell, KS, eleven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
