Von
Davis
April 18, 1921 – January 26, 2017
Von Davis, age 95, passed away on January 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Hays. He was born on April 18, 1921 to Kirtie and Elva (Fechner) Davis in Oakley.
Von graduated from Oakley High School, and served 4 years in the United States Army. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Denver University. After college, he was offered a job in New York, but after his father passed away he moved back to Oakley to take care of his mother. There he served 37 years as a mailman. He married Alberta Annis June 25, 1969 in Oakley.
He would often joke that "if he had walked a straight line all those years, he would have traveled 3 times around the world! And all he saw was "Oakley." Von retired at 62 years of age, and he and his wife Alberta enjoyed grandkids, great grandkids, and gardening.
Von was a compassionate man who left behind a legacy of love for his family and many friends. He especially enjoyed being involved with the activities of his family. He was a deep thinking man who loved his family and God unendingly. He enjoyed going to Scott Lake with his family, having picnics, and seeing the Pyramids south of Oakley. He very much enjoyed reading the newspapers and keeping up on sports, especially those Jayhawks! He put many jigsaw puzzles together with the help of his wife, daughters and grandchildren; playing many card games brought him great joy!
He most recently enjoyed playing bingo and winning candy to pass out to the grandkids when they visited and the school kids that would visit him in the nursing home. He also enjoyed bible study every week.
Von was involved in the Masonic Lodge for 65 years, and played the bugle for 50 plus years for Memorial Day and funerals.
Von is survived by his daughters: Sheryl Janacaro (Fred) of Lawrence, and DeeDee Peteete of Hays; eight grandchildren: Franklin Wright, Amanda (Wright) Sowers, and Michael, Catherine, Mary, Olivia, Jaclyn, and Filomena Janacaro, and five great grandchildren: Kael, Stryder and Johnna Sowers, and Logan and Leif Wright.
Memorials can be made to the Oakley Public Library for his love of reading and learning.
